Course description
The program assists in the training of professional researchers who will be leaders who can assist people to combine technical expertise and competence with cultural, ethical and regulatory competence. We provide opportunities for doctoral research to be conducted under the supervision of faculty with expertise in the research discipline, and to also have a responsible faculty member close to the student’s community. The doctoral program in Bioethics, Sustainability and Global Public Health has two possible specializations:
Specialization 1: Bioethics and Global Public Health
Specialization 2: Sustainability, Peace and Global Development
American University of Sovereign Nations will normally schedule the public defense of the Ph.D. proposal, and the public defense of the Ph.D. thesis overlapping with an intensive course to minimize the travel and logistic costs of students and faculty. Students may also defend virtually also, and these presentations are open to all students and faculty to maximize the opportunity for feedback. We expect the results of research will be published, and faculty will assist students.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Bioethics, Sustainability & Global Public Health (Ph.D.) degree prepares students for roles as professionals and community leaders in a multiethnic global community, by sharing cross-cultural perspectives through the diverse faculty. The program draws upon the wide international experience of the faculty and student body, as well as their multidisciplinary qualifications. The competencies expected from each course are listed under each course (refer to the Catalog).
The program was launched on 28 January 2016 by American University of Sovereign Nations after approval of the Arizona Board of Postsecondary Private Education. The dissertation should be between 50,000 – 70,000 words. To date all dissertations are written in English, although the original field research data may be included in the original language(s) in Appendices. In this case the examiners will include subject matter experts who are native speakers in English and in the other languages.
American University of Sovereign Nations programs are delivered in combination hybrid form including a mixture of on-site and on-line group lectures. The students are encouraged to join intensive training conferences and courses, with professors during their degree. The intensive courses are conducted at various locations, such as universities with which AUSN has existing MOU agreements and other quality institutional settings.
In order to understand knowledge in a decolonized manner, the choice of language and methodology is critical. The accreditation commissioners have a high degree of diversity, being fluent in a wide range of languages, and they possess experience in conducting research ethically on every continent.
In all cases that a student has a query on the inclusion of languages other than English in their dissertation, they should consult with the director of the degree program and their supervisor, who will consider the case. Among the factors that will be considered are the benefits of the original research to readers, the availability of native speakers for examination in the dissertation review committee. These issues should be discussed in light of the literature review, and prior to the conduct of field research because most research instruments and consent forms need to be examined in both the original language and English by the AUSN Institutional Review Board (IRB).
